| Specific gravity and its influence on maturity of mango cv. Baneshan. | |

| Mango fruits harvested at the Tapka stage (when mature fruits start dropping) having a specific gravity >1.00 are considered to have attained optimum maturity. However, the majority of mature fruits of Baneshan mango (89.4%) harvested at this stage had a specific gravity <1.00. No clear relationship was observed between the fruit size or fruit weight and specific gravity of this cultivar. Light stones, low stone:pulp ratio (1:6.04) and a void space between the kernel and internal stone wall in Baneshan mango seemed to be contributory factors. There were more vascular vessels (and these were larger) in the peel of Baneshan fruits than in Bombay Green and Surkha fruits. Quality was slightly higher in Baneshan fruits with a specific gravity >1.00. | |
